Every year, billions of tons of CO2 are released into the atmosphere but the damage caused is reversible. The project DISCO2 STORE received EU funding to unite the efforts of international academics, independent research organizations and private companies to develop safe underground CO2 storages.
Within the context of the EU's commitment to eliminate CO2 emissions by 2050, Europe must undertake a series of parallel mitigation actions. One of them is the CO2 sequestration in geological repositories. However, a prerequisite for such an ambitious initiative is a deep understanding of the reservoir characteristics. CO2 injection operations could prove hazardous due to naturally-occurring or artificial underground mechanical discontinuities (MDs). The DISCO2 STORE project investigates MDs to provide a better interpretation of their effects as well as tools that will ensure safety in CO2 geological sequestration operations.
